Many problems may arise while using USB devices connected to a Windows based PC. Some of the troubles may occur due to software while the rest of the troubles crop up due to hardware settings and connections. The troubleshooting steps to work out hardware connection issues are described below.

Before you start using the faulty USB device execute the following steps.

 1) Unplug the other USB devices

The other USB devices connected to the PC might cause problems for the USB device under testing.

2) Connect AC adapters
It is advisable not to draw power from the USB ports. It is better to use AC adapter as a power source. If the USB device has its own AC adapter, use it.

3) Verify whether the problem happened due to BIOS or chipset drivers
Restart your PC into a different OS. After booting plug in the USB device to see whether the USB device problem occurred due to Windows installation.

4) Rule out the problems with the USB device itself
Plug in the USB device into a different PC. This step is done to confirm whether the problem is due USB device itself or due to PC hardware and configuration.

5) Use different USB cables
The USB wire might be faulty. So try different USB cable. Since the length of the cable might be the cause, use the shortest USB cable. The reason is that the electrical signal on the long USB cable might take more time to reach all the nodes connected to the USB network.

6)  Use other USB ports on the PC
It might happen that the particular USB port under use is defective. So try other USB ports on the PC. Try to plug in the USB device directly into the other USB ports. Try to avoid the use of hubs, port replicators, docking stations, etc.

7) Inhibit the USB controllers from entering sleep mode or suspended state
The USB devices might not be detected because of this Windows bug.

8 ) Disable USB Power Management
Disable the USB power management option to avoid power management related problems.

This article in written in continuation to the previous article headlined Resolving USB drive issues Part 1.

Symptoms of some other USB drive problems:

“Insert a Disk” Message is displayed even when USB drive is connected.
USB drive does not appear even when USB drive is connected.
USB drive appears in Device Manager but not in My Computer or Explorer.

Troubleshooting steps:

Inspect Windows policy settings in registry. Windows may have been customized to hide USB drive from My Computer or Explorer.
Fix Drive Letter Conflicts. USB drive may be trying to use a drive letter reserved for other device.

Symptoms of some more USB drive problems :
Windows displays “Drive is write protected”
Windows displays General Read/Write Error Messages

Troubleshooting steps:
Correct file system errors. If Windows is able to detect the USB drive and assign a letter to it the ‘chkdsk’ option could be used to repair any file system error on the disk.
Verify whether write protection is enabled. If write protection is enabled, disable it.
Recover lost files. Some freeware tools like TestDisk and Photorec are available to retrieve lost data.

When all Troubleshooting steps fail:

Try to recover lost data. If the drive is physically damaged it may be impossible for Windows to detect it for s/w tool recovery. Flash drives are more vulnerable to physical h/w damage compared to other types of drives.Reformat the drive. Reformatting the drive will expunge all the data on the drive but the drive could be functional.

Sometimes email reception problem may arise due to some technical difficulties. The user might be able to send emails but unable to receive emails. In that case the following methods should be tried.

Verify the size and the paper clip symbol of the message

If the size of the email is more than 10 KB and there is no a ‘paper clip’ symbol attached to it, do not to open it. Verify from the sender by phone whether if he/she sent you that email, giving them the details of the email. If the reply is no, delete it quickly. The email could be carrying a virus or worm.

Check the security and option settings

Check the security and option settings to see if your email client is configured to open or handle attachments.

Check the antivirus software installed in your PC.

Check your antivirus software to find how it processes attachments. Some can filter a good attachment and label it as unreadable.

Check whether any problem occurred while sending the email

Ask the sender if they had a problem attaching the file. The file could have gotten damaged before sending to you. Ask the sender to test the attachment, by sending the same email to their own email ids first and then try opening the attachment themselves, before sending it to you.

Try to increase the ‘read’ capacity of your mailbox

Look in the options section of your client for a way of increasing its ‘read’ capacity i.e. number of lines or headers.

Check email box capacity

Ask your Internet Service Provider if your ‘webmail’ box is allowed to process attachments.

Check and adjust the modem speed if required

If you are online for quite long time and your modem is not controlled by an init string / command, your transmission speed may become slow. Consequently by the time you get the email with the attachment, the client may return an error message that you are disconnected from the POP server. If this happens, add the suitable init command.

Software Issues

Some special features of the wireless devices – like quick access keys on a keyboard or additional buttons on a mouse–require special software to drive their operation. Although most wireless keyboard and mouse devices work with computers right out of the box. Users who report issues with these features often have incorrectly loaded the software, or failed to install the software. In some extreme instances, the device’s special features are rendered unusable, as the software may be altogether incompatible with the computer’s operating system. Consult the manufacturer for assistance or exchange the device for a different model, if the software fails to load or cannot be installed.

Interference Issues

Extremely active environments may generate radio signal interference that causes wireless keyboard and mouse devices to produce unexpected behavior, despite the synchronization process designed to safeguard against such problems. Some sources of interference include radios, mobile phones, desktop fans, fluorescent lights, wireless routers, and even large metal objects like filing cabinets. By simply moving the wireless keyboard and mouse away from the source, the interference problem can be resolved in most cases, though some interference, like that from a wireless phone, may require removing the interference source from the computing environment. Audio speaker is the output peripheral connected to a PC for hearing sound. A sound driver is must for the PC to play audio. In case the speaker does not play the audio then try the following methods.

1. First inspect the speaker plug. The usual color code of the speaker is lime green since 1999. The speaker label may mention speakers or headphones. Picture symbols include curved lines and a line with a dot going out from the center. Sometimes a picture of a speaker or even headphones may found. Generally the back portion of the PC may contain the plugs but some newer computers will have plugs on both the front and back.

2. Ensure the speaker is powered up. Some cheap speakers can be plugged directly to the computer and do not need a separate power source. The computer connector usually provides a minimum of 1V to the speakers. The intensity of the sound in these speakers is low, even at maximum volume. Most of the speakers need a separate DC power to amplify the sound.

3. If DC power is required for the speakers, then ensure the power plug is connected to the speaker and the outlet. Sometimes the speaker has subwoofers and power is derived from the subwoofers.

4. The USB speakers receive the power from the USB port on the PC. The USB ports can supply maximum of 5V to the speaker. Read the rest of this entry »
