my affiliate links just didn't come close to covering my adwords cost. Adwords works great for some, particulary eccomerce sites that can generate good revenue from relevant traffic.

That is a bad experience indeed, but I guess in every busy you started small or big, you're going to lose money and you need to work hard to regain it back. Well, since you've been there, can you give us tips how to word in that engine, not losing much money.

What you are trying to say are the Disadvantages of using Google Adwords. But in the other side there are still Advantages using it. I never tried to see in organic SEO how Adwords works.

It's been years since I've really worked with adwords, so anything i said here may be completely outdated. (except for being careful with that optimism. This takes lots of analysis and planning)

Adwords did fine about 2 years ago, I know a lot of people who made decent money off of it. But now, they're saying that I should just lay off of it completely.

Well, Google ad words are always beneficial either it is commerce related site or sports or anything else. I am using it since 3 years and getting regular benefits. Try some Search engine optimization of your website so that you can get more traffic.
