This is pure water that originates from a protected underground source. Such water can be consumed at the source without necessarily having to disinfect or treat it. The water can only be sourced from a specific protected area such as a borehole or a natural exit on the ground, hill or mountain. Traditionally, most of the water that was used came from natural points that were unilaterally protected by the communities.

Natural mineral water has a distinctive smell. This is observed from various water points. The reason behind this diversity is down to the presence of different kinds of minerals in the water. These minerals are picked up from the point of source. Therefore, the geological makeup of a certain area affects the mineral distribution which in turn affects its presence in the water. The taste is derived from these minerals.

Mostly, plastic bottles are used for this purpose. However, due to the damage, they have on the environment especially in countries that lack elaborate recycling protocol for wastes, glass bottles have been introduced to try and phase out the plastic bottles.

Due to this, countries make it a priority to make water to be safe for human consumption by imposing tough policies about the quality of water that should be supplied to the people. Those bottling are therefore expected to meet these standards without fail.
